Zona penyangga umumnya adalah wilayah yang terbentang di antara dua kawasan atau lebih (biasanya negara, namun tidak harus), namun tergantung pada jenis zona penyangga, wilayah tersebut dijadikan wilayah terpisah atau wilayah bersama. Jenis umum dari zona penyangga adalah zona demiliterisasi, zona perbatasan dan zona pembatasan tertentu dan Sabuk Hijau. Zona-zona semacam itu meliputi sebuah negara berdaulat, yang membentuk sebuah negara penyangga, tetapi tidak selalu.

Buffer zones are an important tool for conservation of properties inscribed on the World Heritage List. All along the history of implementation of the World Heritage Convention, the protection of the "surroundings" of the inscribed properties was considered an essential component of the conservation strategy, for cultural and natural sites alike.
