No contexto de arquitetura de software, orientação a serviços e arquitetura orientada a serviços, o termo serviço refere-se a uma funcionalidade de software, ou a um conjunto de funcionalidades de software, com um propósito final que diferentes clientes podem reutilizar para diferentes fins, juntamente com as políticas que devem controlar o seu uso.

A OASIS, um consórcio global da condução e organização de padrões para serviços da web, define um serviço como "um mecanismo para permitir o acesso a uma ou mais capacidades, onde o acesso é fornecido através de uma interface prescrita e é exercido de forma consistente com as restrições e políticas especificadas na descrição do serviço".[1]

Engenharia de serviço

Uma equipa composta por analistas de negócios, especialistas no domínio e/ou arquitetos corporativos desenvolverá o modelo de serviços da organização, começando por definir as funções de negócio de alto nível. Uma vez definidas as funções de negócio, elas são subdivididas e refinadas em serviços que representam os processos e atividades necessários para gerir os ativos da organização nos seus diversos estados. Um exemplo é a separação da função de negócio "Gerir Pedidos" em serviços como "Criar Pedido", "Processar Pedido", "Enviar Pedido", "Faturar Pedido" e "Cancelar/Atualizar Pedido". Essas funções de negócio devem ter uma granularidade adequada ao contexto do projeto e do domínio em questão.

Muitos métodos de análise e projeto podem ser usados para engenharia de serviços, tanto métodos de propósito geral como OpenUP e Domain-Driven Design, quanto aqueles discutidos em Modelagem orientada a serviços.
