Perusahaan ini berkedudukan di New York, Amerika Serikat. Sony Music Entertainment juga mengelola berbagai label global dan artis terkenal di berbagai genre musik.

Pada bulan Agustus 2004, Sony Music bergabung dengan perusahaan BMG untuk membentuk Sony BMG. Empat tahun kemudian, tepatnya pada 5 Agustus 2008, Sony akhirnya membeli 50% saham BMG, dan kembali mengubah nama perusahaan menjadi Sony Music Entertainment.
